Veterans of the circulation finds era were excited to see that a 1943-S cent struck on a bronze rather than a steel planchet realized $141,000 at Heritage Auctions U.S. Coin Signature® Auction held Nov. 1-3 in New York City.
The cent is VF-35 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. It was part of the Geyer Family Collection.
Heritage noted that it was the first 1943-S bronze cent it has handled in 20 years.
Top price honors in the $11.4 million sale were taken by an MS-64 1893-S Morgan silver dollar. It was graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
